Animal breeding

at the Messnerhof

We have been farming and breeding cattle at the Messnerhof for generations. In close-to-nature suckler cow husbandry, our cattle vacation in the summer on the Barbianer Alm, the rest of the year they are on the farm. Fresh mountain herbs and lots of exercise keep our cows healthy. Pigs cannot be missing in a circular economy. The sociable omnivores also get along with the cows very well.

3 reasons why small-scale mountain agriculture is not a climate culprit:

  • The year-round ground cover of meadows and pastures is, unlike fields, a significant carbon sink.
  • Areas unsuitable for arable farming can be used for food production.
  • A local cycle that minimizes all transport routes from feed production to quality meat.
